Uber rolled out a major design overhaul of its app yesterday, the most significant update since 2012. The design changes are meant to offer users a much cleaner interface, with lesser confusion around what service to request, and convenient shortcut options to frequent and recent destinations. And the new app does bring in a lot more simplicity to the app, with small details like the color of the car also reflecting in the app. In addition, to make the app more personalized for each users, it now uses machine learning to better understand a user s routines, and anticipate what a rider wants. There are many changes and additions made to the app that really does make the user experience much more simpler. However, not everything is perfect about the new overhauled app. While the redesign does aim at making the app faster and reducing the steps to book a ride, it has sort of left a loophole, which rather makes it more complicated. While up until now, the older user interface of the app, allowed users to drop a pin and choose a pickup destination, without needing to type in their location, the new app sort of messes that up. After the redesign, however, the app doesn t allow users to drop a pin. At least it s nowhere there on the face of the app. Which, in turn, leads to increasing one extra step that would involve users to type in their location. Many users have complained about the same as well on social media.
@rajatagr first stage of grief is denial Seriously though I think the Uber changes weren’t made for India, particularly that walking thing

I have one word for the new #uber app. Uncomfortable.
Its so over clustered and playing the location dropper on where you are got harder.

And it’s not just people in India facing the issue.

I HATE the new @Uber app! Difficult to use and wrong pickup locations! Time to switch to Lyft!

However, it is important to note, that this is mostly an issue when users put in new pickup locations. In case of the frequently visited locations, the new app is pretty efficient. It in fact shows suggestion for the places where a user visits too often. So that really saves a lot of time.
Additionally, in the older Uber app, users had to choose from a menu of ill-defined options that changed depending on which city they were in, like UberX, Uber Black, Uber Select, Uber SUV, etc. On the other hand, the new app lumps all those options into three categories, Economy (which includes UberPool and UberX), Premium (Uber Select and town cars), Extra Seats (extra-large cars and SUVs), and More (for those who need a child s car seat or a wheelchair-accessible vehicle). (Again, these options vary according to the services available in different cities). This is a welcome change from the previous interface, which annoyingly used to default to UberPool most of the time, unless manually chosen otherwise. Among other new options in the new app, Uber has also added arrival times to all its options. So if a user selects UberPool under Economy, the app will show an estimate time of arrival to a user s destination, which shows a bracket of time for Pool rides, and a more specific time for solo trips. And like earlier, after feeding in destination, the app tells a user how much their trip will cost before they confirm the request. However, surge pricing is still invisible, with just some fine print about fares being higher than normal under your fare quote.
