Last year Nvidia made headlines with its new kepler GPU architecture. This architecture was a giant leap in graphical performance for PCs, but now the company has announced that its next generation mobile SoC, codenamed project logan will deliver kepler graphics to mobile devices. Importantly, in purely terms of compute capabilities the devices will be able to leap frog the PS3 in terms of graphics, but one should not expect such miracles immediately considering developers will need to unlock the possibilities of the new architecture. It goes without saying that the logan architecture will deliver the most advanced graphics performance of any mobile GPU in the world. It will support OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.0 and Direct X 11. It will also be the first GPGPU with true compute capabilities and support of both CUDA 5 and OpenCL and its power efficiency, with performance per watt will be better than that of an iPad 4 by at least 3x. Capabilities like Tessellation will be unlocked by the kepler based GPU in project Logan. It creates geometry dynamically and efficiently on the GPU from high-level descriptions, sizing triangles optimally based on the user’s viewpoint.
It will also support advanced anti-aliasing and post processing algorithms. They will support better image quality in areas of sharp color contrast by making multi-sampling more programmable and allowing applications to implement their own anti-aliasing filters. Both these functions will also enable film quality post processing effects like motion blur and depth of field.
Physics and simulations will be improved as the behavior of rendered objects will be simulated. This includes rigid-body dynamics or animating particles of smoke. This basically means gamers will get to enjoy more immersive and detailed worlds that also act like the real thing.
