OnePlus has just announced the OnePlus 2 in a unique virtual reality event. The phone will begin sale on August 11, and the India price is at Rs 22,999 for 16GB storage, and Rs 24,999 for 64GB storage. The specifications of the smartphone are top notch, with the company claiming that it will even give competition to next year flagships. We pit the OnePlus 2 against Samsung’s 2015 flagship Galaxy S6 to see if it really is the 2016 flagship killer or not. While the Galaxy S6 64GB was launched for Rs 55,900, it is now available in retail stores and online sites for as low as Rs 47,900. In comparison, the OnePlus 2 will set you back by only Rs 24,999 for the 64GB variant, but is available only via the invite model on Amazon India.
Samsung has employed a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen, with a QHD (1440 2560 pixels) display translating into a pixel density of 577ppi. The OnePlus 2, on the other hand, persists with a full HD display rather than QHD. It flaunts a bigger 5.5-inch full HD (1920 1080 pixels) In-Cell display. Purely talking about the experience, the Samsung Galaxy S6’s display is the best we have seen so far, but judging from the little we have seen of the OnePlus 2, it won’t leave you disappointed either.
Processor and RAM
Samsung has fitted the Galaxy S6 with its own octa-core Exynos 7420 processor, which is paired with 3GB of RAM. In comparison, the OnePlus 2 is powered by a Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor paired with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM (the latest in the market). As it had previously revealed OnePlus has worked closely with Qualcomm s engineers to optimize the SoC for performance and also overcome its heating issues.
The Galaxy S6 comes with three storage options of 32GB/64GB/128GB. Currently, OnePlus is only launching the 64GB variant in India, and the 16GB is to follow suit sometime later this year. Neither of the smartphones come with a microSD card slot.
The Galaxy S6 has what we believe is the best camera on an Android smartphone with a 16-megapixel primary camera and features like Optical Image Stabilization and live HDR. The secondary camera shapes up in the form of a 5-megapixel auto focus sensor with an f1.9 aperture.
The OnePlus 2, on the other hand, comes with 13-megapixel camera at the back with f/2.0 aperture, 4K video shooting capabilities, dual-LED flash, optical image stabilization (OIS), as well as laser autofocus similar to what we have seen on the LG G4. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera. It is a little early to suggest how it competes with the Galaxy S6, but initial samples suggest the Galaxy S6 is likely to retain the crown.
The OnePlus 2 comes with a 3,300mAh lithium polymer battery that claims to power the device throughout the day. The Galaxy S6, on the other hand, comes with a 2,550mAh battery bundled along with quick charging function that lets one use the phone for about four hours with a charge of just 10 minutes.
While the Galaxy S6 runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop out-of-the-box with a customized TouchWiz UI on top, the OnePlus 2 runs on the company’s Oxygen OS based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. This move comes after OnePlus ended its partnership with Cyanogen in India. The Oxygen OS comes with customizations like on screen gestures, dark mode, the ability to switch between hardware and capacitive buttons, toggle quick settings and much more.
The OnePlus 2 offers similar, and in some areas even better specs than the Samsung Galaxy S6 at almost half the price. Yes, the Galaxy S6 has a better display and camera, but the pricing of the OnePlus 2 tips the scale in its favor.
