OnePlus has just announced that it will be bringing the upcoming Android P update to its more than two-year-old devices, the OnePlus 3 and 3T. This is a huge deal for users who were not really expecting a major operating system upgrade from the company. It is also worth noting that this is is not really in line with its updated software maintenance schedule where the company announced that it will offer major operating system upgrades, Android Security patches and new features for up to 24 months after the launch of the device while providing an additional one year support for Android Security Patches.
The company shared the details about this decision in a new post on its official OnePlus forums. Gary C, a OnePlus staff member who handles OxygenOS Operations added that the company has been listening to the questions from device owners about the next major update for the OnePlus 3, and 3T. He went on to add that “after internal discussions and evaluation” the company decided to skip on the Android 8.1 update for both the devices and instead focus its “development resources on the Android P project instead”.

He went on to add that OnePlus can offer “more exciting features and improvements” to OnePlus 3 and 3T users. OnePlus has already been working closely with Google for the Android P Beta program for its latest flagship smartphone in the market, the OnePlus 6. So it is likely that they may work to ensure that a comparatively old device such as the OnePlus 3 runs Android P without any issues.
Many had assumed that Android Oreo 8.0 was the last major operating system upgrade for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. The reason for this was because OnePlus 3 was launched with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box and it has already received two major version upgrades in the form of Nougat and Oreo. It is unlikely that Android P will come with Project Treble support for the OnePlus 3 and 3T but the latest Android version is likely to be sufficient for most.
