OnePlus has been among the best performers among Android smartphone makers when it comes to delivering software updates to its phones. And while the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 have been relegated to end-of-life status, the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5 and 5T continue to receive on-going software support from the company, with these four phones in line to be updated to Android 9 Pie in the coming weeks.
However, while the OnePlus 3 and 3T received early access to Android 8.0 Oreo around this time last year and the OnePlus 5 and 5T followed suit soon after, the older phones aren’t as lucky this time. While the OnePlus 6 already has Android 9 Pie rolling out as a stable update and the OnePlus 6T is expected to come with the latest version out-of-the-box, users of the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 5 series will still have to wait a while for the latest software version.
This was confirmed by OnePlus CEO Pete Lau through a Weibo post, in response to a user’s question. The phones would assuredly receive the updates, but this could take a while longer as the company’s software team is still working on it, suggested Lau.
Meanwhile, the company’s focus this year seems to firmly be on its newer devices, with the OnePlus 6 already running Android 9 Pie. Although it initially rolled out in early September as part of the Open Beta program for the OnePlus 6, the software soon after made it in stable form as well. OnePlus is one of the earlier Android manufacturers to have already acted on its Android 9 Pie update plans, while other manufacturers such as HMD Global (Nokia) started a bit later, towards the end of September.

The OnePlus 3 was launched back in June 2016, and is over two years old as of now. Nonetheless, OnePlus has assured that it will deliver Android 9 Pie for the phone, as well as for the newer OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.
