OnePlus continues to hold up its reputation of offering high-quality software support on its devices, as was demonstrated with the launch of the Android 9.0 Pie-based OxygenOS Open Beta program for the OnePlus 6. The company has also not forgotten about its 2017 devices, the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The phones are now receiving the latest version of the Open Beta software – version 18 for the OnePlus 5 and version 16 for the OnePlus 5T. While the latest version does bring improvements, it’s missing a major change that users of the devices on the OnePlus Open Beta program have been looking forward to: Android 9.0 Pie. The latest Open Beta is still on Android 8.1 Oreo, even though the company has already rolled out the Android 9.0 Pie-based Open Beta update package for the OnePlus 6, along with a second version with minor tweaks. Changes in this version include a fix for beauty mode for the rear camera, improved stability for portrait mode on the front camera, improved stability for the weather app, and other general bug fixes and improvements. The changes are relatively small, and there’s no change in the Android security patch, which remains at the August 2018 level as was rolled out with the previous Open Beta for the two phones.

If you’re already on the Open Beta software path, you’ll receive the software updates as OTA packages, but you also have the option to manually download and update the package from the OnePlus forum. As always, bear in mind that beta software isn’t as stable as the regular package, and porting your phone onto the Open Beta program involves the usual risks. It’s likely that the Android 9.0 Pie-based version is on its way, and will roll out in the coming weeks; hopefully, we could even see it on the next version.
