OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, the flagship smartphones from last year, are now receiving a new OxygenOS update that brings support for 4G VoLTE on Idea Cellular‘s network in India. The changelog for the latest version of OxygenOS 5.1.6 reveals that it brings latest Android security patch, improved stability for phone calls via Bluetooth and official support for Project Treble.

OnePlus has already confirmed that it is working on Android 9 Pie update for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The newest version of Android, which is already seeded to OnePlus 6, is expected to arrive as part of OnePlus’ “big update is on its way” teaser. The support for Project Treble was initially spotted with the release of OxygenOS 5.1.5 but the company is now officially confirming its support with the latest version.

The OxygenOS 5.1.6 is a minor update with the focus on updating security patch to October, enabling VoLTE support on Idea’s 4G network and improving Bluetooth stability during voice calls. The official acknowledgement of Project Treble support suggests how close OnePlus is to the release of Android 9 Pie update for the two devices.

Project Treble is being pitched as Google’s answer to end fragmentation seen across all Android devices. This allows Android smartphone makers to swiftly release new software updates without breaking their own user interface. Project Treble breaks Android OS framework and the vendor implementation into two separate layers, allowing OEMs to rapidly test their devices for new updates and issue final update.

OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T running OxygenOS 5.1.5 are being updated to OxygenOS 5.1.6 in a phased manner. The roll out is being carried out in a limited number initially and the company will expand it to more users over the next few days. The rollout is based on regions and is being randomly pushed to a limited number of devices.
