Close on the heels of the impending launch of the OnePlus 6, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has rolled out the latest software update for its 2017 smartphones, the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The phones are now receiving OxygenOS 5.1.0, which apart from a handful of functional updates, also brings the two phones up to Android 8.1 Oreo. The update is being rolled out in a phased manner, so it may not immediately appear on every compatible device. However, you can go into the ‘System Updates’ section in the phone’s settings to check if your phone is ready to download the update.

The software update brings small changes to the functionality of the two phones, including optimizations for gaming mode that pause adaptive brightness and saving power, network boost for gaming apps in the foreground, added category tags in the search section of the launcher and auto name folders based on category. Additionally, the OnePlus 5T also gets full-screen gesture support, which was already active in the open beta version of OxygenOS for the device.

While the OxygenOS updates are relatively minor in comparison, the key change of course comes with the primary system update to Android 8.1 Oreo. Additionally, the phone also gets a security patch update to April 2018. The stable firmware update includes some of the features first introduced with the Open Beta for both phones. A notable addition is gesture navigation for the OnePlus 5T, which allows users to hide the on-screen Android navigation keys and replace those functions with iPhone X-like gestures. This isn’t applicable to the OnePlus 5, since the phone has off-screen hardware-based navigation keys below the screen.

While the OnePlus 5 and 5T continue to receive software support, the OnePlus 6 edges closer to launch. Expected to be unveiled some time in May, a handful of tidbits about what to expect with the phone have already been revealed. In terms of specifications, the smartphone is confirmed to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, along with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
