Display and design

OnePlus 5 is garnering tons of criticism for its iPhone-like curved antenna lines and horizontally positioned dual camera module. Nonetheless, it boasts a unibody design with the front panel looking similar to the OnePlus 3T. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the bottom, doubling up functionality with the ceramic home button. The power button and SIM tray are on the right, alert slider and volume buttons on the left, Type-C port, 3.5mm jack, and speaker grille at the bottom. As for the display, the OnePlus 5 features a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED screen with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top.

The iPhone 7 Plus is equipped with a 5.5-inch full HD LED display with pixel density of 401ppi. The screen comes with a wider color gamut to display more vibrant, cinema-standard colors which is said to be about 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 6s. Additionally, the smartphone boasts a dual camera module. It is horizontally positioned at the rear. Up front, there is a capacitive fingerprint sensor embedded into the home button. The Samsung Galaxy S8 features a slightly different display as compared to the OnePlus 5 or iPhone 7 Plus. It features Samsung’s signature ‘Infinity Display’ design. What also sets the Galaxy S8 apart is that is equipped with a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display with quad HD resolution and Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top. The dual camera module common in the OnePlus 5 and iPhone 7 is absent from the Galaxy S8, with just a single 12-megapixel camera in place.

Chipset

Both the OnePlus 5 and the global variant of the Samsung Galaxy S8 are powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, with the Indian variant of the S8 powered by the 10nm Exynos 8895 SoC. The OnePlus 5 packs either 6GB or 8GB of RAM with up to 128GB internal storage. The Galaxy S8 packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which is expandable by up to 256GB via microSD card. It is to be noted that recently, Samsung announced a 6GB RAM variant for the larger Galaxy S8 Plus smartphone in India.

The Apple iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, runs the A10 Fusion 64-bit quad-core processor paired with an M10 co-processor and 3GB of RAM. There is also a hexa-core GPU to boost graphic performance by up to three times compared to the iPhone 6. Variants of the iPhone 7 Plus are based only on the non-expandable internal storage, with options going from 32GB to 256GB. On the software front, the OnePlus 5 and Galaxy S8 run versions of Android Nougat. The former runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat-based Oxygen OS 4.5.0 while the latter runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box with Samsung’s UI on top.

Camera

The dual camera on the OnePlus 5 includes a 16-megapixel camera + 20-megapixel telephoto camera for DSLR-like effects. Bringing iPhone 7 Plus-like similarities, there is also a portrait or bokeh Mode in the OnePlus 5 for attaining depth-of-field in photos. Up front, there is a 16-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.

In comparison, the Apple iPhone 7 Plus is equipped with a pair of 12-megapixel cameras with f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS). The telephoto lens comes with an aperture of f/2.8. Other camera features include 2X optical zoom and 10X digital zoom. There is support for 4K video recording at 30fps, slow-motion full HD videos at 120fps, and slow-motion HD videos at 240fps. Up front, there is a 7-megapixel camera with face detection, HDR, and panorama. ALSO READ: Samsung Galaxy S8 vs Apple iPhone 7: Low-light camera performance compared

The Galaxy S8 does not feature a dual rear-camera. It is equipped with a 12-megapixel dual-pixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture and an 8-megapixel smart autofocus front camera. Camera features include optical image stabilization (OIS), electronic image stabilization (EIS), and phase-detection auto-focus.

Battery and connectivity

The OnePlus 5 houses a 3,300mAh battery with Dash Charge for fast charging. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone offers dual-SIM support, 4G LTE with VoLTE, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS. The iPhone 7 Plus is fuelled by a 2,900mAh battery and includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC. Apple has also included an advanced LTE chipset to offer faster data download speeds of up to 450Mbps. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery and connectivity options include dual-SIM support, 4G LTE with VoLTE, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS.
