The OnePlus 6 is finally here, and it’s pretty much what we expected

The leaks and reveals were so extensive that there isn’t much left to be surprised about. But the OnePlus 6 is still a fantastic proposition nonetheless.

Another saga of leaks, reveals and endless rumors comes to an end, as the OnePlus 6 has finally been launched. Priced from $529 (approximately Rs 35,800) onwards, the highly-anticipated smartphone is finally here. And as expected, the device is a powerhouse of epic proportions, sporting the best hardware available today for Android smartphones. The OnePlus 6 adheres to pretty much everything we had expected, from the notched display to the specifications under the hood. The OnePlus 6 comes with a 6-28-inch full-HD+ 19:9 aspect ratio AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 2280×1080 pixels. The device has the notch cutout at the top of the screen, which holds the earpiece, front camera, notification LED and proximity sensor. The screen stretches further at the bottom as well, but it isn’t quite as edge-to-edge as the Apple iPhone X. There’s a slim area at the bottom that isn’t screen. The back of the phone is where most of the aesthetic differences are visible. The OnePlus 6 features a glass back, and is available in four color variants: Mirror Black, Midnight Black, Silk White and Avengers Black. The first three are standard editions and will be available through the phone’s life cycle, while the rumored Avengers: Infinity War edition still isn’t official yet. For the time being, the standard editions will go on sale, starting with the Mirror Black variant and midnight black variant. OnePlus 6 Specifications and Software

In terms of specifications, the OnePlus 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, which is the current flagship SoC from Qualcomm and arguably the best mobile chipset in the world. There are different storage and RAM variants of the phone, starting with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, going up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is only on the Avengers edition for now, and the only configuration for that edition.

The Silk White edition won’t be available in the 6/64 configuration, while the Mirror Black and Midnight Black variants are available in both 6/64 and 8/128 options. The lack of significant change in the storage and RAM indicates that OnePlus is still at the top of its game with specifications, and indeed there’s no real need for an increase just yet.

Indeed, a lot hasn’t changed on the OnePlus 6. Dash Charge is still the same and the OnePlus 6 uses the same charger as the one we first saw on the OnePlus 3. Charging is through the USB Type-C port, audio connectivity through 3.5mm is present, and the battery is a 3,300mAh unit. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with OxygenOS 5.1.2 at the time of launch.

The software has been built upon a bit, and a notable change is gesture controls and specific tweaks for gaming mode, the notch display and camera. The alert slider has switched over to the right side, while the SIM tray goes to the left. There’s still no micro-SD card slot, but you get dual-SIM capability. Courtesy of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, the phone also has dual-LTE connectivity, with active standby for two LTE connections.

The camera is largely the same as before, although super slow-motion video recording of 480fps at 720p is now possible, along with 240fps at 1080p. The primary sensor is a 16-megapixel shooter, while the secondary 20-megapixel camera serves for 2X lossless zoom and portrait mode shots. However, the pixel size has gone up to 1.22 microns on the primary sensor, which will presumably help with low-light shooting. OIS is also present on the 16-megapixel rear camera. The front camera is a 16-megapixel shooter, with no changes from the OnePlus 5T.

OnePlus 6 Availability and Price

While the phone has been officially announced, the event on May 17 will reveal details on pricing and availability in India. The phone will go on sale on May 21 on Amazon India, but specific details are yet to be revealed. Post the initial launch through Amazon India, the phone will also be available through oneplus.in and the company’s offline channels, which include Croma and OnePlus authorized stores across the country.
