Not being waterproof is one of few drawbacks OnePlus 6 has compared to other flagship smartphones from Apple, Samsung and LG. While the company does state that the phone is splash resistant, an IP rating is still missing from its specification sheet. But now a recent teardown of the phone reveals that the OnePlus 6 might be more water resistant than we previously thought.
According to iFixit’s, teardown, the internals on the OnePlus 6 seem prepared to take more than just a simple dive in water. OnePlus has added plenty of protective layers on the inside. The teardown reveals a rubber gasket integrated into the SIM card tray, which should help prevent water from getting in. Other protective layers include black silicone seals running around most of the sockets on the phone’s motherboard. There are more gaskets layered around the speaker grille, USB Type-C port, and the headphone jack.
All of this hints at the fact that the OnePlus 6 might even work if you take it into a pool. However, we would recommend not doing that and neither does iFixit. Even if there is more protection, OnePlus still doesn’t provide warranty for water damage. That said, it’s still good to know that the phone is ready to face more than what OnePlus would like you to believe.

In the iFixit teardown, the OnePlus 6 received a reparability score of 5 out of 10, meaning that the phone is neither too easy nor too difficult to fix. The scores fall right between Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Apple iPhone X.
