The OnePlus 6, the current flagship smartphone from Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus, is now eligible for the OxygenOS Open Beta program. OxygenOS Open Beta 1 is now available for OnePlus 6 users, and all users can now update their smartphones to run on the latest version, regardless of whether the phone is currently on the Developer Preview of Android P or the stable OxygenOS software based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The announcement comes through a post on the OnePlus forums, which also contains links to download the ROM package. While the update is said to be more stable than the Android P developer preview, it is still not as stable as most users will be used to, particularly since it is the company’s first official ROM on Android 9.0 Pie, and is the first Open Beta version for the OnePlus 6. The forum link describes known issues with the software package, including certain applications not functioning as expected, Google Pay not working and the Google Play Store showing a message stating that the device is not certified by Google. As such, moving to the OxygenOS Open Beta 1 is not recommended for all but advanced users who are aware of the risks.

Do also note that moving on to the Open Beta program will put your phone on this software path, and it will no longer receive stable OxygenOS updates. Additionally, the change in software could clear all of the contents of the phone, in certain cases.

Key changes on the software package include a brand new OxygenOS UI for Android Pie, Android 9.0-based gesture navigation, a new DND mode, Gaming Mode 3.0 and other changes. While this is just the start, OnePlus will be constantly improving the Open Beta software to the point where it will gain significant stability in the coming weeks.

The OnePlus 6 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, and comes with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The phone is priced from Rs 34,999 in India, and is available to buy through Amazon India as well as certain offline locations across the country.
