Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus recently launched its highly-anticipated flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 6. Soon after the OnePlus 6 went on sale, the company sent out an update that allows users to hide the infamous notch. The update also enabled super slow-mo video capture mode allowing users to record 720p videos at 480fps, and 1080p videos at 240fps. A Reddit user discovered that the option to enable Always-On display was there before the update, but was disabled later. He posted on the forums saying, before installing the update that it received out of the box I messed a bit with the settings and found out that under Display > Ambient you could check an option between “when raised” and “always on” and was ready to do a PSA on reddit about it but after I installed the update that brings the hide the notch feature and the may security patch the option for always on disappeared. In a statement to PunikaWeb, OnePlus said We have an official update from our Technical Team confirming that always on display on OnePlus 6 was removed due to battery saving concern. It is likely that enabling the feature could be causing unusual battery drain, and till the company doesn t figure out the problem and come out with a fix, it has disabled it. While the update disabled Always-On display, it did add one feature that enables seamless Android updates. With seamless updates, two system partitions are created to have a bootable system to access. Also known as A/B system updates, it allows the system to apply updates to B system partition in the background while the user is still using the phone. The process skips the Android is Updating screen after every update, which takes about 10-15 odd minutes. As the result, the smartphone boots to the update OS within minutes.
