The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are two of the best mid-range flagship smartphones that offer top-end specifications without putting a huge dent in your wallet. Since their launch, the OnePlus smartphones have been off to a great start and OnePlus has even managed to dethrone Samsung and Apple as major bransd in that segment in key markets such as India.

However, the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T does have a significant flaw which has to do with its inability to stream videos in high definition. By default, the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T can only stream video in standard definition since the device lacks the necessary certification. However, the Chinese smartphone maker has announced a new program to resolve that issue. However, there is a catch here.

In order to stream videos in HD, all compatible devices must have the Widevine L1 certificate installed on them. The certificate is required by the major streaming services for HD video and the certificate can only be installed over a physical connection with an authenticated PC. One of the problems here is that the fix cannot be installed over-the-air and the device needs to sent back to OnePlus.

OnePlus says it will take at least five working days and the company has confirmed that it will cover the courier costs for those trading in their devices. The cost will be covered for service regions located in North America, Europe, India and China. However, OnePlus users elsewhere will have to pay for shipping themselves.

We have reached out to OnePlus India to know more on how the program works here. The company has confirmed that it is targeting a time frame of five working days and it will bear the courier cost. Additionally, customers can take their phones to any of the 11 exclusive OnePlus service centers in India where they can have the fix certificate installed immediately, with the customer leaving with their device at that time itself.

It is needless to say that OnePlus should have added the certificate at the time of shipping the device since it would have avoided the need to send the device over to a service center. If you are a OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T user planning to send across the device then make sure to back up all your data and factory reset the device before sending it to the service center.
