OnePlus runs multiple beta programs for its smartphones currently available in the market. One of the most prominent of those beta programs is the “Open Beta” updates which allows anyone with an eligible OnePlus smartphone to join and receive features that are usually released with a new stable version of OxygenOS a little ahead of the stable rollout. These builds being rolled out as part of the Open Beta program are generally stable but since they are part of testing phase, there is also a possibility of these builds affecting the performance of these smartphones. Now, it appears that the latest Open Beta builds are one such release which were plagued by serious bug. The issue was so serious that OnePlus decided to pull them from its website altogether. The Open Beta builds pulled down by the company include Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 5, Open Beta 5 for the OnePlus 5T, Open Beta 33 for the OnePlus 3 and Open Beta 24 for the OnePlus 3T. The main reason behind pulling down these builds seems to be battery life as evident from the user forums where OnePlus users have reported extensive drain in battery performance. There are also reports of other issues but battery life seems to be the only issue affecting all the devices. In response, OnePlus is now linking the Open Beta pages to the previous builds but those who have already downloaded the buggy Open Beta builds will have to wait for an update that acts as a corrective measure. We have reached out to OnePlus for an official statement on the release and their plan for release of a new update, and are awaiting a response.

OnePlus is one such brand that emphasizes extensively on its own software. It is considered as the best version of Android after the stock Android being shipped on Google Pixel smartphones by many users. While these ‘Open Beta’ builds arriving with bugs is not an unusual thing, it is common among OnePlus users to download the update as soon as they go live. The Chinese smartphone maker will have to release an update in quick time with a fix to those running these affected builds or help them downgrade to an older build.

OnePlus offers its UI named as OxygenOS in the global market and HydrogenOS in China. The software offers most of the features that are supported by stock Android, in addition to features such as the Dark Theme throughout the interface, not even found on the vanilla version of Android. It has a healthy community of followers who test new features and update the company with new feature ideas. The company is said to be working on its next flagship smartphone dubbed the OnePlus 6, which will embrace the notch and also offer an option to hide it. Apart from flagship specifications, it is expected to feature a new design, iPhone X-style gestures and an alert slider that will now offer a “slide to focus” option.
