Alongside a global headquarters in India, OnePlus also plans to set up a research and development centre in the country. “The R&D centre is to be set up either in Hyderabad or Bengaluru by the year end,” Vikas Agarwal, General Manager, OnePlus India told mediapersons. OnePlus started as a hardware-first company with an approach to launch one great flagship smartphone every year. With a moto that reads “Never Settle”, OnePlus has switched to two flagship smartphones a year strategy but it has tried to offer significantly premium experience without costing a lot of money. Now, the company seems to turning its key focus and efforts towards India with local headquarter and R&D facility.

“The centre will have around 50 employees the Chinese centre has around 100 to help localise products for Indian market,” Agarwal added. The company says it is expanding service centres from 12 to 25 and plans to also set up around five experience zones. A local headquarters will help the company offer further localization of its products and improved customer experience.

India is the fastest growing smartphone market and OnePlus is the fastest growing smartphone brand in the country. According to Counterpoint Research, the company registered a growth of 192 percent in the premium segment and enjoyed a 25 percent share during the first quarter. In order to expand its reach further, OnePlus plans to expand its offline footprint as it charts a focus to make India its major market.

Since its debut in India, OnePlus smartphones have been exclusively available online on Amazon India. With future devices, the company might makes its flagships available on other retail stores as well. “Our one-flagship-a-year strategy has helped us stay focussed on creating superior products with premium user-experience,” Agarwal added.
