Bear in mind that these are entirely unofficial ports developed by individual developers, and may not be very stable.

If you’re still using the OnePlus X, OnePlus 2 or OnePlus 3/3T, this bit of news might be particularly useful to you. Community developers working on the XDA Developers platform have developed early AOSP Android 9 Pie ports for the phones in question, allowing users to get these older devices onto the latest version of Android early. However, do note that these are unofficial ports by individual developers, and aren’t very stable. Only advanced users who understand the risks involved should attempt this.

This might be worth trying for older users, or if you happen to have a spare old OnePlus device lying around. The OnePlus X and OnePlus 2 didn’t even receive Android Nougat, so it’s possible to use these software packages to give the smartphones a three-version jump from Android Marshmallow to Android Pie.

The OnePlus 3 and 3T, on the other hand, are receiving continued software support from OnePlus and are currently running on Android 8.0 Oreo. The company has also confirmed that these phones will receive official Android 9 Pie. Hence, it may make sense for these users to wait a while for the official software update. Even the newer devices, the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6, are slated to receive official and Open Beta based updates to Android 9 Pie in the coming weeks.

You can head over to XDA Developers to download the software packages for the OnePlus X, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus 3/3T. Note that there are listed issues with these ports, and not everything will work. For example, the OnePlus X port lists issues with camera HDR, the notification slider, USB MTP and off-screen gestures. However, most key functions do work, although there could be issues with the use of these working functions as well.
