India came on top in terms of improvements to the download speeds during the past 12 months. According to Ookla Speedtest Global Index 2017, India’s download speed over fixed broadband jumped 76.9 percent in 2017. The growth in download speed was the best among the world’s largest countries. With a growth of 76.9 percent, India managed to defeat China, the US and Japan in terms of growth in average download speed. However, the average download speed is still significantly slower than major developed economies. During November 2017, India recorded average download speed of 18.82Mbps, whereas the US had average download speeds of 75.94Mbps, followed by Japan with 73.51Mbps. China had the third fastest broadband connection with average speeds of 61.24Mbps. Among large countries, Nigeria again came at the bottom with 3.8 percent growth in download speed during last year.
The time during November 2016 and November 2017, India also saw 42.4 percent growth in mobile download speeds. The average mobile download speed for November 2017 was recorded at 8.80Mbps. India was surpassed only by Pakistan where the average mobile download speed increased by 56.2 percent.
Among large countries, Nigeria and Bangladesh saw their mobile download speeds drop by 8.4 percent and 7.4 percent respectively. Mobile users in China saw average download speeds of 31.22Mbps in November 2017, but the growth in mobile download speed was modest at 3.3 percent.
The mobile download speed increased 30.1 percent globally over the last 12 months, while the fixed broadband saw 31.6 percent jump in download speed. The November 2017 average mobile download came in at 20.28Mbps while fixed broadband speed hit 40.11Mbps.
Ookla’s speed test results are based on tests conducted by people who use Speedtest app every month. In November, it said India ranked 109 in the mobile internet speed and 76 for fixed broadband speed globally.
