There are two ways to look at the recent Ookla report from an India perspective. The good news is India has risen three positions in global ranks for average mobile internet speeds. The not-so-good news is with the revised rankings, India stands at 109 for mobile, and 67 for broadband internet speeds, respectively. Internet infrastructure has been a long standing topic of debate among consumers in India.
With the entry of Reliance Jio, there has been significant change in data consumption patterns. But most of that happened when Jio was offering data for free. Ever since Jio has started charging for its services, incumbent operators have begun to aggressively price their services to put up a fierce competition.
India continues to rank well in terms of peak internet speeds. However, average internet speeds across mobile and broadband continue to be a concern.
China ahead of India
Unfortunately, while the Indian telecom industry is busy playing the tariff war, it doesn t seem to have corrected its fundamentals with quality of service and internet speeds. India has for long lagged behind countries such as South Korea, Singapore, and the Scandinavian countries in terms of average and peak internet speeds. It is worth noting that China stands at 26 for average mobile internet speeds, and 20 for average broadband internet speeds.
