Huawei and its sub-brand Honor have released good smartphones across budget, mid-range and flagship segments. The smartphones offer good cameras, while also offering good value for money. All Huawei and Honor devices ship with Android OS, with EMUI custom skin on top.
The EMUI skin is now more refined, and comes with less bloatware compared to what it was a couple of years ago. Yet, there are users who prefer stock Android, and some tech-savvy ones prefer rooting the smartphone, and flashing custom ROMs. Some of the options available out there include LineageOS, CarbonROM, and Resurrection Remix ROM. And now, team OpenKirin has introduced AOSP-based custom ROMs for select Huawei and Honor smartphones. It was first spotted by XDA-Developers.

Earlier, porting ROMs for Huawei and Honor smartphones running on HiSilicon Kirin chipsets was difficult. However, with Project Treble, porting has simplified to a good extent. Team OpenKirin has opened a new website – openkirin.net – from where you can download the latest builds available for smartphones. You can find the ROMs, and all installation instructions on the page.
In terms of compatibility, the OpenKirin ROM is compatible with 17 devices, which includes Honor View10, Honor 8 Pro, Honor 7X, Honor 6X, and Honor 9. It is also compatible with Huawei P10 Lite, Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10 Lite, Mate 9 Pro, Mate 9, P10, P10 Plus and P10 Lite. Also, the MediaPad M5 8.4-inch, MediaPad M5 10.8-inch and MediaPad M5 Pro tablets are compatible with the ROM. As of filing the story, ROM download links weren’t live, but you can check back in a few days to check the status.
