A couple of months ago, Opera introduced built-in ad blocker in the experimental developer release of the browser. Now, the feature has jumped out of beta and has made its way to the stable release of desktop browser. The company has rolled out the same feature for its Android mobile browser too, starting with Opera Mini. While ad-blocking has its share of controversy, especially with publishers as it hurts their ad earnings, Opera claims to offer faster web browsing experience, especially on mobile. The company also mentions that its built-in ad-blocker is up to 45 percent faster than Chrome with AdBlock Plus extension. In terms of mobile browsing on Android, enabling ad-blocker loads websites 40 percent faster, while saving some download data too, the company says. Opera is the first browser company to offer a native ad blocker across devices. We do this because we want to provide people with the fastest browsers in the market. Our speed test shows that online ads slow down the browsing experience. Now, with Opera, you can browse a lot faster than, for example, in Chrome,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera.
How to enable native ad blocking on Opera s mobile and desktop browsers
To begin with, you ll first need to download the Opera Browser for PC from here and for Android smartphone and tablets from the Google Play Store.
Once you download and install Opera web browser, you ll need to manually turn on native ad blocking feature. To do this, click on Menu button on the top left corner of the web browser. Then click on Settings > Block Ads and tick box that says block ads and surf the web and you re done.
To deactivate the feature for a specific website, you can simply click on the shield icon appearing on the top right corner of the address bar. Do note, this shield icon will only appear once the page on which ad blocker is running is completely loaded. The icon also shows the number of ads it blocked, along with statistics of daily, weekly and overall number of ads it has blocked.
On Opera Mini for Android:
On your Android device, head over to the O Menu and tap on data-savings summary. Simply toggle block ads ON and you re done. The feature is available in both high and extreme data savings modes.
Besides ad-blocker, Opera has one other privacy feature. It recently introduced free virtual private network (VPN) on its developer version. While the feature hasn t made its way to the stable release, it could finally be included in the upcoming updates.
We have been using the developer version of the Opera Web browser since the company announced free VPN, and so far the experience has been impressive. We do face random lags and crashes at times, but that s expected as it s a test build. Other cool stuff such as themes, speed dial to quick launch sites and bookmarks sync option make Opera browser a worthy competitor to Google Chrome.
