India is home to the largest number of Opera Mini users in the world. Partnering with local OEMs in India and neighboring countries is part of our growth strategy to take Opera Mini s user numbers in the region from strength to strength, said Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia, Opera Software. Since the beginning of this year, more than 100 Android devices with Opera Mini preinstalled on them have been launched in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
While, Micromax has already started releasing Android phones with pre-installed Opera Mini like Canvas 4 and Canvas Doodle 2, other manufacturers will launch devices with the mobile browser pre-loaded in the coming months.
Though such partnerships should help boost its market share, in truth Opera is not having the best of years in our country. This year the Norwegian company has lost its lead in Indian market to UCBrowser developed by UCWeb. UCBrowser overtook Opera this year to capture 30 percent of browser market share in India.
