Oppo F7 4GB RAM vs 6GB RAM: Performance and benchmark tests compared

We put the 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM variants of the Oppo F7 head-to-head, to see if that extra RAM makes a real-world difference.

The Oppo F7 was launched a month ago, and naturally generated a lot of attention for its design and features. Priced from Rs 21,990, the Oppo F7 has gathered a fair bit of praise for its screen, which includes the notch, and the edge-to-edge display for a screen-to-body ratio of close to 90 percent. The phone was launched in three colors are two specification variants, with the entry level Rs 21,990 variant sporting 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and the higher Rs 26,990 variant coming with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

And while the aesthetic differences between the black and red variants are an entirely different story, the key feature of the recently launched diamond black variant is its 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The additional storage has its obvious benefits – more space on the phone to keep your photos, videos, apps, games and music. But this is a question that many people have asked over the years: does more RAM really matter?

We’ve put the 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM variants of the Oppo F7 to the test for this exact reason. Apart from running benchmark tests, we’ve also run some real-world comaprisons of how the phones perform in similar conditions. Read on to find out how the 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM variants of the Oppo F7 compare.

Oppo F7 Benchmark Tests

During our tests, I ran two of the most popular Android benchmarking tools on the two devices – AnTuTu Benchmark and Geekbench. Both variants are powered by the same MediaTek Helio P60 chipset and run on the same software version, which is Android 8.1 Oreo with Color OS 5.0 on top. The results were surprising, with the 4GB RAM variant of the smartphone actually producing better scores on both AnTuTu and Geekbench.

The difference in the Geekbench scores is miniscule, but the 4GB RAM version does surprisingly have the slight advantage. The difference in the AnTuTu score is surprisingly high with a difference of nearly 3,000 points. Note that I tested each phone twice with these scores being the higher results of each.

The reason for this could be better software tuning for the 4GB RAM version, with the phone better optimizing the available RAM during benchmark tests considering the low load on the phone (I had no other apps running on both devices, and ran the benchmark tests immediately after rebooting both phones).

Oppo F7 Real-World Performance

When it comes to actual use, the additional RAM does come in handy. During my testing, I did find a slight difference in the way the two phones ran when using multiple apps, with the 6GB RAM variant showing a bit more smoothness and ability to have more apps on standby. The additional RAM will also make a difference in the long run, as the phone will be able to cope with the growing needs of the Android operating system better over time, thanks to the additional RAM.

However, the presumed software optimization on the 4GB RAM variant did show once again. While running the benchmarks, I started both at the exact same time, with the 4GB variant completing each benchmark test a few seconds before the 6GB RAM variant. This carried on even with various applications, such as games and standard Android apps. In all cases, the 4GB RAM variant would load apps just a fraction of a second faster than the 6GB RAM variant. However, the differences are small, and nothing to be concerned about if youown or are considering buying the 6GB variant.
