The Oppo F7 is priced at Rs 21,990 for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant, and Rs 26,990 for the 6GB RAM/128GB variant.
The phone has a 6.23-inch 19:9 full-HD+ screen with a 'notch' for the earpiece, proximity sensor and front camera.
It has a 25-megapixel front camera and a 16-megapixel rear camera.
They say imitation is the best form of flattery, and perhaps it’s also a method of piggybacking on proven success. In the smartphone industry, imitators and upstarts have long turned to the Apple iPhone series for inspiration. Be it the look and feel of the user interface, the ‘courage’ to do away with the 3.5mm jack, or the infamous ‘notch’, Apple pretty much sets the path for others to copy. Now we’re not saying that a lot of these brands are necessarily copycats, but the resemblances and inspiration is clear for all to see. Just last week, we saw the launch of the Vivo V9. It looks a lot like the Apple iPhone X, but with a price tag of Rs 22,990, isn’t quite as premium as the phone it draws inspiration from. And today, we see yet another phone that comes from a similar school of thought. The Oppo F7 comes with a similar 6.23-inch full-HD+ 19:9 aspect ratio screen and nearly the same styling cues. We’ve had a chance to play around with the phone, and here are our first impressions.
The Oppo F7 screen defines it
The first thing you’ll notice about the Oppo F7 is, of course, the screen. This style is the theme of the year, and we’re going to see many more smartphones launching this year coming with the tall screens that take up practically the entirety of the front of the phone. The Oppo F7 has a 6.23-inch 19:9 aspect ratio IPS screen with a resolution of 1080×2280 pixels. There is also the ‘notch’, and the Oppo F7 is the third Android device I’ve seen in a month to sport it, after the Asus Zenfone 5 (2018) and Vivo V9.
The notch on the Oppo F7 sports the 25-megapixel front camera, earpiece and proximity sensor in that order. There’s a thin strip of non-screen space at the bottom, which is about the same size as on the Vivo V9. The similarities between the Oppo and Vivo phones are striking when it comes to the screens and the overall size of the phones. However, other layouts are different, as are the build and colors of the two phones.
The buttons, ports, speaker grilles and specific layout of where everything goes is fairly different on the two phones, and it almost feels as if the positioning was deliberately changed so as to not seem to alike. The Oppo F7 also comes in more striking color options; there’s a red variant, a reflective silver option and something called diamond black, which is perhaps the most interesting of the lot thanks to its unique lines that make it appear to have depth and three-dimensionality.
Numbers tend to be everything, and the Oppo F7 packs its specification sheet with numbers that sound impressive. The phone comes with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, and a MediaTek Helio P60 SoC with eight cores clocked at 2.0GHz. There’s also a 3,400mAh battery, and the phone runs on Android 8.1 with Color OS 5.0 on top. While power users tend to prefer devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, many buyers tend not to care about the chipset make. The Oppo F7 is targeted at this segment of the market, where features, design and ‘oomph’ matter more.
The phone features both a fingerprint sensor and face unlock, for biometric security. The fingerprint sensor is at the back of the phone, while face unlock naturally relies on the high-resolution front camera. What I didn’t quite like about the phone was its build quality; the Oppo F7 has a plastic frame and plastic back. While the back is designed to look like glass, it’s nothing more than highly reflective plastic. On the whole, the Oppo F7 doesn’t feel quite as well built and classy as it could.
Camera with AI
Oppo’s marketing approach centers on highlighting the phone’s features, one of which is its camera prowess. Oppo touts its use of artificial intelligence in the camera algorithms to enhance pictures, and some of this is effective in practice. A couple of modes are the AI-based depth effect which lets you take portrait shots with either camera despite both cameras being single-lens setups, and the vivid mode, which enhances colors. There’s also a fair amount of face beautification at play, which supposedly makes you look better in selfies.
While I haven’t used the camera much, initial impressions are decent enough. The front camera uses its resolution and AI-effects to take better pictures, and you also get some add-ons such as AR stickers, which let you add special effects to your pictures. We will be testing the camera properly for our review of the Oppo F7.
While the Vivo V9 which launched just a few days ago made a huge impact, the Oppo F7 has done itself a disservice launch so soon after that phone. While it’s practically the same phone, it comes across as the copy of the Vivo device. It does however benefit from being Rs 1,000 more affordable than the Vivo V9, and also has a 6GB RAM / 128GB internal storage variant that will appeal to buyers looking for a little more memory capability.
Regardless of that, the Oppo F7 is a good looking smartphone that’s designed to appeal to its target audience effectively. The camera features and screen will no doubt be the phone’s USPs, and buyers are likely to be drawn to the Oppo F7 by those.
