After a series of leaks, OPPO has finally launched its OPPO R9s and R9s Plus smartphones at an event in China. Successor to the OPPO R9 and the R9 Plus, which were first launched in March this year, the new set of smartphones boast of improved megapixel count on their cameras. Priced at 2799 Yuan (approximately Rs 27,700) the OPPO R9s will start selling in China from October 28 while the OPPO R9s Plus , priced at 3,499 Yuan (approximately Rs 34,600), will start selling from December. Both the OPPO R9s and OPPO R9s Plus come with fingerprint sensors, improved cameras, and fast charging batteries. The new smartphones run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with OPPO s own Color OS 3.0 on top. The original R9 and R9 Plus were also selfie-focused smartphones with the R9 featuring a 13-megapixel rear/16-megapixel front cameras and the R9 Plus boasting of a pair of 16-megapixel cameras. The new OPPO R9s and OPPO R9s Plus standardize the camera specification with the larger variant coming with OIS. OPPO has been quite active in the selfie-focused smartphone category with its range of smartphones which boast of a powerful front camera for selfie lovers. Its range includes the OPPO F1, OPPO F1s, OPPO F1 Plus, and more. While the R9 was sold as F1 Plus in international markets, it is unclear if the newly announced R9s and R9s Plus will follow suit and launch as OPPO F1s and OPPO F1s Plus in markets outside China. OPPO R9s Specifications
The OPPO R9s, which is priced lower of the two, boasts of a 5.5-inch 1080p display with 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 5 on top. Under its hood runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset with Adreno 506 GPU coupled with 4GB of RAM. It comes with 64GB of internal storage which is further expandable via microSD card up to 256GB. The smartphone features a fingerprint scanner on the front. It draws its juice from a 3,010mAh battery that comes with VOOC fast charging ability, which is claimed to offer two hours of talk time in five minutes of charging.

USP of the new OPPO smartphones is their selfie cameras. Both smartphones feature Sony’s IMX398 sensor in their rear camera unit with dual-focus, which is said to be 40 percent faster than phase detection autofocus (PDAF).
On the camera front, the OPPO R9s features a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, electronic image stabilization (EIS), 4K video capture support, and LED flash. For selfies, there is also a 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture.
Compared to the OPPO R9, the successor boasts of a higher megapixel in the front camera and a battery boost from the earlier 2,500mAh. What has also improved is the chipset and RAM. The OPPO R9 came with an Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8939v2 Snapdragon 616 chipset with 3GB of RAM while the successor boasts of 4GB of RAM that comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset.
OPPO R9s Plus Specifications
Pricier than the OPPO R9s, the OPPO R9s Plus features a larger 6-inch 1080p display and as speculated earlier, it is the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 chipset. The recently announced chipset by Qualcomm is said to feature a faster LTE modem, which offers up to five times faster download and upload speeds. Along with that, the chipset also comes with ClearSight technology for built-in support for dual-camera system in smartphones. While the OPPO R9s Plus does not feature a dual camera system, it does come with 4G LTE compatibility that will be aided with the new processor.
On the camera front, the OPPO R9s Plus also features 16-megaixel cameras in the rear and front. Akin to the OPPO R9s, the rear camera of plus-sized variant also comes with f/1.7 aperture but offers optical image stabilization (OIS). It further comes with 4K video capture support and LED flash. The selfie camera comes with f/2.0 aperture.
In terms of storage, the OPPO R9s Plus comes with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage that can be further expanded up to 256GB via microSD card. The smartphones are in competition with the Samsung Galaxy S7 that is touted as the best Android phone this year. Priced at Rs 36,999, the Samsung Galaxy S7 features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440X2560 pixels at 577ppi. Under its hood is a 1.6GHz Octa-core processor that is coupled with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which is further expandable up to 200GB via a microSD card. In terms of camera specification, the Samsung Galaxy S7 features a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, PDAF, OIS, and LED flash. It further features a 5-megapixel camera in the front. Other features include geo-tagging, 4K video support, touch focus, face/smile detection, Auto HDR, and panorama. The smartphone is powered by a 3,000mAh battery and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
At Rs 27,999, the OnePlus 3 offers a 5.5-inch full HD display. Under the hood is Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. While the OPPO R9s Plus offers memory expansion, the OnePlus 3 lacks the feature. In terms of camera, the OnePlus 3 comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, OIS, and LED flash. It is coupled with an 8-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture. On the battery front, the OnePlus 3 comes packed with a 3,000mAh battery which pales in comparison to the OPPO R9s Plus that comes with 1,000mAh more power. While the OnePlus 3 comes with the new-age Type-C connector, the new OPPO R9s and OPPO R9s Plus feature the regular USB port for charging and data exchange. The OPPO R9s Plus also competes with the LeEco LeMax 2. Priced at Rs 29,999, the LeMax 2 features a 5.7-inch Quad HD (2560 1440 pixels) display with pixel density of 515ppi. Under the hood is Qualcomm s Snapdragon 820 Quad-core processor clocked at 2.15GHz and paired with Adreno 530 GPU and 6GB of RAM. In terms of camera specification, the smartphone offers a 21-megapixel of rear camera with f/2.0 aperture. In the front is an 8-megapixel camera. The rear camera comes with PDAF, OIS and dual tone dual LED flash. It comes with 64GB of internal storage, which is not further expandable. Drawing its juice from a 3,100mAh battery, the smartphone comes with Quick Charge 3.0 feature for fast charging and Type-C support. The LeMax 2 also comes with a fingerprint scanner.
