Oppo has successfully completed 5G internet access for the first time in a lab test. Brain Shen, Oppo’s Global Vice President and President of China Business Department, shared on Weibo that Oppo has tested out successful connections to 5G with a custom-made Oppo R15.
In a blog post, Oppo revealed that it customized the original R15 with 5G with a Systemboard, RF, RFFE and antennas to perform successful connection in their 5G communication protocol laboratory environment. Not just that, the phone even showed a “5G” logo on the top right corner of the screen.
“This demonstration would be a milestone for the whole process. The 5G team will continue to make new progress and achievements, and also showcase our expertise in mobile phone design technology. OPPO will accelerate the development of 5G smartphones and lay a solid foundation for the release of commercially available 5G smartphones in 2019,” noted blog.
Oppo recently announced its partnership with Qualcomm under the banner of “5G Pilot” program at the Beijing 2018 Qualcomm China Technology and Cooperation Summit. The company even unveiled a Research Institute to enhance technological innovation and research capabilities. The Oppo Research Institute is headquartered in Shenzhen with other R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Yokohama, and Silicon Valley (United States).

In May 2018, Oppo had announced the successful implementation of the world’s first 5G video call demonstration using 3D structured light technology. The test was conducted at Oppo’s Research Institute using a 3D image camera combined with an Oppo phone.
