Oral-B Pro 2000 Review: The king of electronic toothbrushes, but it's held back by its hefty price tag

Yes. We have reviewed our first electric toothbrush, which costs a whopping Rs 5,800. I brushed my teeth with a toothbrush that costs more than a basic smartphone, and here's what I think.

How many times have you entered a general store, and looked at an electric toothbrush at the checkout counter, contemplated buying it, but always put it back looking at the 4-digit price tag and the uncertainty of it being worth it? Well, I have done that a 4-digit number of times. So we thought, along with smartphones, tablets, laptops and other consumer electronics we review, why not include a toothbrush in the list. I got to spend a few weeks with the new Oral-B Pro 2000 electric rechargeable toothbrush, and here’s what I gathered from the experience. Before anything else, let me put this out there, that this was the first electric toothbrush I used. However, in the 8,882 days that I have lived till this day, I have brushed twice everyday for well over 8,000 of those days, so I am no amateur (just saying)! What’s in the box?

When I received the product, the first thing I (naturally) did was to flip the box and see how much this one costs. At Rs 5,800, it costs as much as a decent smartphone. Though, the price tag actually made things a bit more interesting, so I immediately unboxed the toothbrush, wherein (along with a lot of excitement) I found the body or the handheld part of the electric toothbrush, the head separately placed in a small sealed pack, a two-pin charging stand for the brush and a user manual. Of course, I immediately assembled the toothbrush. The Oral-B Pro 2000 is pretty lightweight and comfortable to hold. It has a plastic body with a rubber strip for good grip which runs along the line of your thumb when you hold the toothbrush. Right where the rubber grip begins, there is a power button to switch the brush on and off. And right at the bottom is the indicator light, which blinks green when the device is charging.

There are a few things about the product that you should know when you are using an electric toothbrush. You need to be extremely careful about the bristle attachment. And by careful, I mean that you need to ensure that you never drop that attachment or let it get damaged. Since that part has a motor built inside which lets the bristle area oscillate, any damage to it is makes the brush entirely unusable. You don’t want to wake up to a shock in the morning, do you?

The experience

While the Oral-B Pro 2000 comes with 6 different options for head attachments, the one we got to review was the one with the cross-action bristles. The head of this attachments is shaped round, and what’s really amazing about it is that it can oscillate, rotate and pulsate all at the same time. But unlike the average non-electric toothbrushes that we are used to, the bristle area of this one is much smaller. Initially this feels a bit odd, like you are using a toothbrush meant for kids. But you get over that soon enough.

This particular attachment is meant for two cleaning modes, which is daily cleaning and gum care cleaning. The daily cleaning mode has the standard functionality in which the bristles primarily work to remove plaque. Oral-B claims this is a much better approach than manual cleaning and can be helpful for people with swollen gums and sensitive teeth. The second is the gum care mode, which is a massage mode for gentle stimulation of gums. When the brush is powered on, the toothbrush automatically runs on the daily cleaning mode. However, when you press the power button a second time, the rotation of the bristle head slows down for gum care mode. Pressing a third time switches the toothbrush off.

Oral-B Pro 2000

During my time with the Oral-B Pro 2000, I’ve used it everyday at least once. My first observation was that the bristles of the toothbrush are quite soft. I was always afraid that an electronic toothbrush would hurt my gums, but this is surprisingly soft and it causes no irritation or pain either. However, here’s a pro tip; when you put the toothpaste of the bristles, do not hit power first or the paste would splatter all over. Place it on your teeth first, and then switch it on.

Further, one other interesting feature of the Pro 2000 is its visible pressure sensor. Basically, whenever the user applies extra pressure on the teeth while brushing, the sensor light up. Along with that, it also has an on-hand timer which buzzes every 30 seconds to let the user know that it’s time to move on to the next quadrant of the mouth. The toothbrush also alerts when the dentist-recommended brushing time of 2 minutes is over, preventing you from overdoing it. Another impressive thing about this toothbrush is its battery. In last 4 weeks, I have charged the brush only three times, and it will run for about a week on a full charge.

Holy grail or fail?

At the end of my time with the Oral-B Pro 2000, I would be lying if I said that I never felt like going back to my ordinary toothbrush. How much ever extra work the manual brushing takes, it is somewhat more satisfying and leaves your teeth feeling more ‘brushed’. There are pros though; for one, you don’t need to put any effort into it, and your teeth are clean and fresh in under two minutes. Secondly, gum care mode ensures healthier gums, which is more important that most people assume.
The third reason may be a bit unrelated and silly, but the running motor in your mouth really wakes you up.

However, there is one big con to the Oral-B Pro 2000, which is its price. Rs 5,800 is just plain exorbitant for an electric toothbrush, when you consider that other electric options can be bought for as little as Rs 400. So while the Oral-B Pro 2000 is the undoubted king of electrical toothbrushes for its functionality and performance, it might be a bit too expensive for all but the wealthiest among us.
