The TCS Youth Survey report said, “71 percent of the respondents spend at least an hour everyday online. While 31 percent of them respond to notifications once a day, 30 percent respond within 5 minutes.” Also Read - Mobile internet suspended in Haryana till 5PM on February 1, 2021
The survey aims to capture the digital habits of children between the age group 12-18 years. However, when it comes to news, the survey finds traditional media as the king.
“Overall, TV and newspapers were the most used means of consuming news (75 percent) followed by links from friends/ family on Facebook and online sources,” it said.
Face to face communication is still the most preferred way of communication with friends (36 percent) as compared to phone calls and social media, the survey said. The report said that 43 percent of the respondents’ online activities are monitored by parents and a similar percentage of the respondents’ parents have access to their online accounts.
Smartphones were found to be the most coveted electronic gadget (82 percent) among Kolkata teens. “It is interesting to note that smartphones are also the most popular mode of accessing the Internet (48 percent) followed by computers,” the report said.
For online shopping, 85 percent of the respondents said they use e-commerce sites. Electronic gadgets (51 percent) were the most popular buy for the youths closely followed by books and clothes.
