Palm, the company that pioneered PDA in the late 90s, but struggled to adopt to modern smartphone world, is making a comeback. Now owned by TCL, which also makes Alcatel and BlackBerry-branded phones, Palm has introduced its first product. It is called Palm. Yes, just palm and it is trying to sell a unique idea in this convoluted smartphone market.

The first Palm product looks like a tiny smartphone but it is not really pitched as one. Instead, it is a $349 consumer electronic device that has LTE connectivity built-in and acts as extension of your primary phone. If you are someone who wears a smartwatch as a companion for your smartphone then this new Palm phone will be a similar companion. It has a 3.3-inch 720p display with a pixel density of 445ppi and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset. It comes with 3GB RAM, 32GB non-expandable storage, a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

However, it cannot make phone calls or receive messages on its own. In order to make use of its ability, customers need to pair it with their primary phone by subscribing to Verizon‘s number share service, priced at $10 extra. The service links your primary phone number to the Palm as well.

Since it is meant to be a supplementary device, it lacks fingerprint sensor and can be unlocked using traditional passcode or using facial recognition feature. It has Gorilla Glass 3 on the front as well as rear, a speaker at the front, an 800mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C port, IP68 water and dust resistance and runs Android 8.1 Oreo.

Palm has designed a custom launcher that basically relies on gesture based navigation instead of the traditional Android user interface. The Palm lacks NFC or headphone jack and will be available only from Verizon. The Palm is small and is being dubbed as the device that can help you control addiction to your primary phone. The question is do you need another phone to limit screen time with your primary phone. Well, Palm and American professional basketball player Stephen Curry believe, you do.
