Post demonetization, Paytm saw a massive increase in its app s adoption, with its app downloads growing by 200 percent within 24 hours of the demonetization announcement. And with the government encouraging use of mobile wallets, Paytm has turned to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the new policies. However, the increasing popularity of the mobile wallet came with its own flipside. Since a while now, a number of Paytm users have been complaining about the app repeatedly facing outage. Since over twelve hours, the mobile wallet app has been facing some service issue. Even at the time of writing the story, the app did not allow even accessing the account passbook, with a pop-up of Service unavailable showing up. The pop-up reads that the app is facing a technical issue.” Additionally, the pop-up notification also asks users to share a screenshot of the error with Paytm. When contacted by PTI, a Paytm spokesperson attributed the outage to sudden jump in number of users and associated traffic. The spokesperson said that Paytm has added over 20 million new users in last 40 days taking the total number of registered users with to 170 million. “Furthermore, we are seeing much higher interaction per user as compared to earlier and are also witnessing continuous increase in the traffic on our platform. At the evening peak hour today, we witnessed three times the traffic of the last peak that we handled. As we continue to route the traffic to new servers and install additional capacity, certain customers are facing the time out,” the spokesperson said.
Naturally, this outage triggered a lot of unrest among users who have been relying on the mobile wallet during this hour of cash crunch in the country s economy. Many users took to Twitter to complain about the service issue. ALSO READ: PayPal accuses Paytm of copying its logo
