Pebble announced the Time last week, and instead of directly releasing it via retailer route, the company chose the crowd funding platform Kickstarter and urged users to help it out. The company had sought pledges for $500,000, but thanks to 61,266 backers it has gleaned $15,136,800 in less than a week. That s more than 3,000 times the company had asked for. This wasn t the first time Pebble picked Kickstarter to sell and market its product. In 2012, the company had also put the first Pebble E paper smartwatch on the crowdsourcing platform. The smartwatch had received $10.27 million.
The Pebble Time surpassed COOLEST COOLER: 21st Century Cooler that’s Actually Cooler product to claim the top position. The Cooler had attracted more than 60,000 backers who gave the product $13.29 million for $50,000 it was started out to raise.
The Pebble Time comes with a color e-paper screen, a built-in microphone, and an intuitive user interface called Timeline. Last night, the company also announced the metal-bodied version of the Pebble Time. Called the Pebble Time Steel, the device is made of premium materials and will be available for purchase for $299 at the retail store later this year. The steel variant of the Watch bears a striking resemblance to the forthcoming Apple Watch.
