Yesterday, OnePlus surprised a lot of people by announcing what it currently calls the ‘OnePlus TV‘. For now though, there is no firm word on what this product will be. While it could be a traditional TV like most people think, there’s also the possibility that it could be entirely different, such as a dongle that enables better interfacing between your smartphone and TV. Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, recently spoke to PC Mag on why his company is building a smart TV. “I’ve been thinking for more than a year about entering the smart home industry,” Lau said to PC Mag through a translator. “It’s not only to make a TV; we want to explore what OnePlus can do in the smart home industry.” Lau was once in charge of Oppo’s DVD player division, and indeed Oppo’s Blu-Ray players are widely considered the best in the world right now. It’s only natural then, that he’d like to take OnePlus into this division, given his experience in the space. But while most people think the company is making a TV, we at BGR India think differently. Based on the words and teasers we’ve seen so far, we’re thinking that the OnePlus TV could be a smart dongle of sorts, that allows better connectivity between a smartphone and TV, and something that serves as a smart hub for your connectivity at home.
“The TV doesn’t have to be a TV that plays films or TV shows or series. It can be a home automation hub to control your home’s climate and entertainment system, or the window for you to communicate with the world,” he said. This, if anything, further boosts our suspicions that the OnePlus TV is unlikely to be a traditional TV as we know it. The goal, as described by Lau, is to use the OnePlus TV as a ‘clean, smart, efficient hub’ for your home.

For now though, OnePlus is inviting suggestions for features on its product from its fans, including a contest to help name the device. It’s likely that we’ll see the OnePlus TV in December, considering that the contest itself suggests that the product name will be announced before December 17. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more. However, the next big launch, coming next month, is the OnePlus 6T.
