Google had a rough time last year as the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have been experiencing multiple issues. There were display issues with Pixel 2 XL s P-OLED panel, screen burn-in, low speaker output and fingerprint sensor lag among others. The original Pixel and Pixel XL too had its fair share of issues, and now users are reportedly suing Google over defective mics. According to a report on Fast Company, a class action complaint has been filed this week with users alleging that Google knew about defective mics on the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, and yet it sold those defective units. The lawsuit further claims that even after warranty replacement, the mics on the smartphones continued to have problems. However, neither of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit got their phones repaired with Google under the standard warranty period. Back in March 2017, Google did acknowledge microphone issues with the Pixel phones. On the support forums, a Google employee attributed the problem to a hairline crack in the solder connection on the audio codec. He further mentioned that the problem can come and go depending on how the phone is held, or depending on the temperature.
This is especially frustrating as a user because, just when you think you ve got it fixed, the problem randomly comes back, the Google employee wrote. This could explain why the plaintiffs did not consider repairs under warranty until over a year after buying the smartphone.
Girard Gibbs LLP, the law firm that is suing Google over issues with the original Pixel, is also looking for a class action suit over the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL as well. After users complained, Google extended the standard warranty to two years for the Pixel 2 devices, but the Pixel owners have been left out.
