Among many other things like demonetization, Yoga day and Swachh Bharat project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also popular for his sharp dressing style, frequent foreign visits, and also for the obsession with the camera . Now, the government-owned Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC), also known as Khadi Gram Udyog, has issued 2017 calendar and diaries, which feature the picture of the Prime Minister on the cover, replacing the image of Mahatma Gandhi, who encouraged Khadi spun fabric in the first place. Narendra Modi replaces Gandhi in Khadi Udyog’s calendar, diary. When you’re that good at spinning yarns, it makes sense.

It is unfortunate that Mahatama Gandhiji’s image was replaced by that of @narendramodi in Khadi Udyog calendar & diary. Extremely tasteless

While at the same time, there were some who came out in the Prime Minister’s support.
What if @narendramodi appeared on KVIC Calendar?
I went to Khadi store after PM’s appeal, never got inspired from Gandhi to buy Khadi.

What PM @narendramodi has done for revival and promotion of KHADI in the last 2.5 years is unparallel .He deserves to be on the cover .

Frankly speakg, for me pic of a man wearing Khadi Fashion will promote Khadi better than a semi naked pic of Gandhi.https://t.co/dUvYij7ADP

So to say, Mahatma Gandhi s charkha picture is not only iconic, but it is symbolic of his philosophy of Swaraj or self reliance, and his idea of simplicity. Naturally, upset over Mahatma Gandhi s picture missing on the calendar of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, a section of its workers are staging a protest. Virtually rendered speechless, employees of KVIC at its Vile Parle headquarters staged a silent, soul-cleansing protest, reported IANS. The employees gathered and prayed before a statue of Gandhi installed in the KVIC hall, and later wearing black bands on their mouths staged the symbolic protest.
KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena said this was not unusual and there have been deviations in the past. The entire khadi industry (udyog) is based on Gandhiji s philosophy, ideas and ideals, he is the soul of KVIC, so there is no question of ignoring him, Saxena said. Justifying the move, he added that Modi has been wearing khadi since long, and has popularised it among the masses and even among foreign dignitaries, while developing his own styles around khadi. In fact, he is khadi s biggest brand ambassador, and his vision matches KVIC s, of Make In India by making villages self-sufficient, skill development by generating employment among the rural masses, infuse modern technology for khadi weaving, innovations and marketing. Plus, the PM is a youth icon, said Saxena.
