Prime Minister Narendra Modi is just a day away from becoming the most followed world leader on social media. If you are wondering how is that going to happen, here s how! Presently, United State s 44th President Barack Obama is the most followed world leader on social media, with a following of close to 81 million on Twitter. However, Obama ends his presidential tenure today, making our Prime Minister, who has till now been the second most followed, the number one. Modi at this moment has over 26.5 million followers on Twitter. Basically, Obama after today would no longer stand in power as a world leader. Interestingly, Narendra Modi s followership on Twitter is closely followed by United State s 45th President-elect Donald Trump with his 20.5 million followers on the social media platform. Trump s account is followed by PMO India s account with 15.5 million followers, the POTUS account with 13.6 million followers, the White House with 13.4 million followers, and Dalai Lama with 13.1 million followers, and the Pope with 12.5 million followers.

Narendra Modi, and many from his party like Sushma Swaraj and Suresh Prabhu are known for being active on social media. Modi has used social media successfully to shape his public image as a tech savvy leader, aligning himself with the aspirations of a younger generation in India, said Joyojeet Pal, assistant professor at University of Michigan s School of Information, whose paper has been published in the latest issue of the Television and New Media journal. Additionally, after Narendra Modi s government completed two years in power earlier last year, Facebook had released an analysis on how the NDA-led government had been using the social networking platform to reach out to the masses. Ministers across portfolios have been using Facebook tools like Q&A, Live, Instant Articles and Notes. Of the 50 cabinet ministers in the government, back in May Facebook noted 47 of them had verified presence.
