Xiaomi launched the Poco F1 as its answer to OnePlus 6 and other premium mid-range smartphones few months back. The smartphone, with its premium hardware and cheaper price tag, has managed to win a lot of interest. While customers have reported issues with the device, the company has been rather quick to address them with software updates within a week. However, the company is yet to release a major Android update and is now answering some of those questions.

At the launch event, Xiaomi sub-brand revealed that it plans to release Android 9 Pie by the end of this year. Now, the company has revealed that it plans to release Android Q for the smartphone as well. Poco is essentially trying to say that it will offer two major software updates for the smartphone, which was launched with Android Oreo out-of-the-box. Google, which sells its own smartphones named Pixel, also promises two years of major software updates and three years of security updates.

Jai Mani, Head of Product at Poco Global, said in a tweet that the company aims to release “at least P and Q” for the Poco F1.

For Android smartphone makers hardware has never been a difficulty, but software has always been a pain point. Barring OnePlus, most Chinese OEMs never release the newest version of Android for their devices. Xiaomi is no exception. It released Android Oreo update for most of its smartphones only in the second half of this year, and is not expected to begin Android Pie rollout until next year.

By promising Android Q for Poco F1, the company seems to be taking a larger view on the software front. If the new form of flagship devices are any indicator then it is clear that software is what will define these devices and not the hardware that run them. For that to happen, Xiaomi and its sub-brand need to first deliver the newest software to its smartphones. For the time being, we will need to see whether Poco delivers Android Pie update for the smartphone first.
