The PureView name was synonymous with camera-centric smartphones from Nokia in the past, and indeed we saw some of the best camera phones from the old Nokia launch with PureView branding. These included the legendary Nokia 808 PureView with its 41-megapixel camera, and a handful of Nokia Lumia devices, which used the PureView branding and technology to boost camera capabilities. According to a new report by Nokiamob.net, the PureView brand could be making a comeback.

The report suggests that HMD Global now owns the rights to the PureView trademark, which was previously owned by Microsoft after its purchase of the Nokia devices division in 2014. The ownership of the trademark was transferred to HMD Global, the current brand licensee of Nokia, on August 23. This means that we could well see Nokia smartphones in the near future sporting the fabled PureView branding.

The PureView name was used for camera-centric smartphones, which touted the then-revolutionary PureView technology. The first phone with the branding was the Nokia 808 PureView, which was announced back in 2012 and came with a 41-megapixel camera, the largest of its time and still one of the biggest camera sensors on a smartphone. HMD Global could use the PureView branding to market any future camera-centric smartphones it launches.

The company has been using some of Nokia’s iconic brand names and products in its newer line-up, including bringing back the Nokia 3310 and Nokia 8110, along with a return on the ‘Sirocco’ name on the Nokia 8 Sirocco. HMD Global, a company run by former Nokia executives in partnership with Taiwan-based Foxconn, has been the exclusive brand licensee of Nokia, in a deal expected to run till 2026. The company has released a slew of smartphones running Android under the Nokia brand name since 2016, when it acquired the right to market phones under the Nokia brand name.
