Qualcomm has tied up with Readboy to announce the Readboy W8, a smartwatch specially aimed at kids. The wearables market is rapidly expanding with most brands slowly getting into the race. Smartwatches have now caught up and there is a huge demand in the market for the gadget. However, while most brands launch smartwatches aimed at adults, there have not been any smartwatches launched for children so far. Considering most kids these days own smartphones, there probably exists a market for smartwatches targeting children too. The Readboy W8, according to Qualcomm is a smartwatch for family communication and also helps the kids learn. The smartwatch is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform and provides voice assistance to kids. Kids can ask the smartwatch questions and the smartwatch responds with answers. The Readboy W8 comes with a host of data and information built in to provide a learning experience for kids. The watch is well equipped with over 100,000 general knowledge questions and answers. Presently, the Readboy W8 can understand the instruction in two languages – Chinese and English. Additionally, it can also teach kids the languages. Apart from having general knowledge and language skills, the Readboy W8 is also adept at stories and poems. The smartwatch can narrate tales and folklore to kids. The smartwatch comes in two colors – blue and pink. Apart from helping kids stay connected to family and learn new things, the watch also comes with high speed connectivity options and other basic essentials of a smartwatch. “It s no longer just about the ability to make emergency calls using a connected watch, with the Readboy W8, not only are kids constantly connected with their parents but they enjoy a personal companion to rely upon,” said ShuGuang Qin, General Manager, Readboy. Readboy W8 specifications
Readboy W8 runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform which is based on Android Wear. In terms of connectivity and security, it provides multiple options like indoor and outdoor positioning through a combination of Wi-Fi, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and 4G location triangulation techniques. The watch comes with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display. The inbuilt storage is 4GB with 512MB RAM. The watch also sports a 2-megapixel camera. Readboy W8 is expected to go up for sale in China in September 2017. There is no word on whether the smartwatch will be available for other markets.
The kids watch industry continues to grow rapidly in China and innovations like the Readboy s interactivity is attracting new types of customers into this growing area, said Pankaj Kedia, Senior Director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
