Qualcomm is hosting the 4G/5G Summit 2018 in Hong Kong, where the chipmaker announced Snapdragon 675 SoC at the event. It also made some other announcements related to 5G technology, and what to expect in future, Alexa-enabled headset kit, and new Wi-Fi 802.11ay chipsets with 60GHz band.

Earlier this year in July, Qualcomm announced QTM9052 with fully-integrated 5G NR millimeter wave (mmWave) modules. However, device makers had been struggling to fit the antenna modules in smartphones with edge-to-edge displays and thinner form factors. To address this issue, Qualcomm has reworked on the modules, and they are now 25 percent smaller in size. These antenna modules will work with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem, with the modules supporting the following bands – 26.5-29.5GHz, 27.5-28.35GHz, or 37-40GHz. Device makers can include up to four modules to prevent signal loss.

According to a report on Engadget, Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon expects “at least two” major flagship Android smartphones to come with 5G connectivity in 2019. He further added saying that one of the device will be unveiled in early 2019, whereas the second would come sometime in the second half.

A total of 19 OEMs will be launching 5G-enabled smartphones, including the likes of Motorola, HTC, LG, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Nokia. OnePlus has already confirmed that it will be among “one of the first” OEMs to launch 5G enabled smartphone next year. Xiaomi has also been teasing the Mi MIX 3 which will likely support 5G and come with 10GB of RAM.

If you notice, the likes of Huawei and Samsung are missing from the list, and it is because both have been working on their own 5G solutions. It will be interesting to see how their modems will compete with the Qualcomm X50. It is also important to note that even though manufacturers bring 5G enabled devices, carrier side implementation is also equally important. Qualcomm is partnering about 18 carriers across the globe to push 5G standard, and it remains to be seen how it pans out.
