Qualcomm has launched two new WiFi chipsets that enhances wireless experience for the future of 5G mobile connectivity. The San Diego-based chipmaker has launched QCA64x8 and QCA64x1 as part of its family of 60GHz WiFi chipsets. The new WiFi chipsets are capable of delivering 10+ gigabit per second (Gbps) network speeds and wire equivalent latency.

In a released statement, Qualcomm says that these new chipsets set the industry low-power benchmark for extended device battery life. These new WiFi chipsets are meant for new experiences such as ultra high-definition video streaming, Virtual/Augmented Reality (AR/VR) and mobile screen casting. All these experiences require really fast 5G internet connection with low latency and will rely on high-bandwidth mmWave spectrum. The technologies powered by this new wireless connection will also be able to enable fixed wireless mesh backhaul.

“mmWave holds enormous potential to support a new class of user experiences, and Qualcomm Technologies is leading the charge with both its Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family and unlicensed 60GHz Wi-Fi mmWave solution,” said Rahul Patel, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Connectivity and Networking, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Our 11ay solutions were developed with the flexibility to support a broad ecosystem of smartphone, router or fixed wireless access platforms and provides the industry with the critical building blocks needed to take connectivity performance to the next level.”

Qualcomm says the new QCA6438 and QCA6428 are industry-first family of 11ay 60GHz WiFi chipsets for infrastructure and fixed wireless access. The QCA6421 and QCA6431 are meant for mobile applications. Qualcomm has also confirmed that Facebook’s plan to deliver high-speed internet connectivity with Terragraph technology will be based on its new QCA6438 and QCA6428 chipsets.

The new QCA64x8 and QCA64x1 family of WiFi chipsets are distinct from the 2.4GHz and 5Hz bands commonly used in WiFi networks around the world. These new mmWave-based 60GHz WiFi chips will offer low-interference and bandwidth-rich spectrum for “increased wireless capacity, multi-gigabit speeds, and ultra-low latency.”

Once deployed, these new mmWave based 60GHz WiFi chipsets will be able to power applications such as 4K video streaming, lag-free mobile screen casting to a large entertainment device and truly immersive wireless virtual and augmented reality experiences. These WiFi chips will also enable new forms of gaming experiences without compromising battery life.
