Qualcomm had forayed into the smartwatch segment with the launch of its Toq watch late last year and now the chipset maker is now all set to introduce its chipsets for smartwatches. Eddie Chang, Qualcomm s CDMA Technologies Taiwan president has reportedly said that they are working on a smartwatch chipset of their own, and will launch it later in the year, Gforgames noted. The company has not revealed any further detail about the specifications of the chipset or the partners for this chipset, however this news certainly clears Qualcomm s plans on making the best out of the wearable device market. With the Toq Qualcomm had mentioned it was just a reference design for smartwatch makers and it was not looking at competing with hardware vendors, who are its clients, in the smartwatch space. There are a number of players, including Samsung, Sony and LG who have launched their wearable in the market while other players like Apple and HTC are still working on their respective wearable gears.
With more players exploring their wearable strategy, there are not many vendors to provide chipsets to these companies that can take into consideration the space and power limitations of smartwatches.
It is not only Qualcomm that is looking at wearables. Intel has also been aggressively working on its own wearable tech. The company had showcased a smartwatch prototype at the CES early this year, indicating its interest in the wearable segment. It had recently acquired smartwatch maker Basis for $100 million, and is expected to use the latter’s resources to work on developing Intel’s own chipsets for wearable devices. Also, knowing that the company was left behind in the smartphones segment to the market players like Qualcomm and MediaTek, which developed chipsets on rival ARM architecture, Intel does not want to lose its market in the wearable segment.
MediaTek, on the other hand, too had announced its Aster chipset for smartwatches, however it has not yet launched it in the market.
