Qualcomm Sense ID is Apple's Touch ID killer with more accuracy and support for lower-range smartphones

Qualcomm Sense ID

Chipmarker Qualcomm took to the stage at the ongoing Mobile World Congress event to announce a new fingerprint sensing technology for Snapdragon-based smartphones. The company announced that it is working on Sense ID, which is a fingerprint scanner like the TouchID on Apple s iPhones. However, there is a key differentiation in the mechanism on how these two technologies work. Qualcomm says that unlike the Apple s Touch ID, which uses high-resolution capacitive sensors to scan a 2D-image of the fingerprint, Qualcomm s Sense ID aims to tackle that with ultrasonic sound waves that map the surface of the finger in 3D. This apparently makes the world of a difference, the chipmaker notes. According to it, by using ultrasonic sound waves, it is able to take greater resolution imprints to recognize features such as pores and fingerprint ridges, which will bolster security and possess reduced sensitivity to moisture, grease, sweat or hand lotion. Furthermore, this also ensures that Sense ID will work through glass, sapphire, aluminum, stainless steel, and plastics.

While Apple’s Touch ID is known for its consistency and accuracy, there have been numerous instances where the Touch ID has been found at fault. Last year, we heard several users complain about their iPhone 5s losing accuracy over time.

The Sense ID will be launched on Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 425 devices, and will be compatible with all 400, 600, and 800 series SoCs. Furthermore, it will also support the FIDO authentication standard.
