Qualcomm is working on a new SoC, the Snapdragon 1000 SoC for next-generation ARM-powered laptop devices. This news surfaced a couple of days before Qualcomm revealed its Snapdragon 850 SoC, one of the first from the company for the same device segment. There was not much known about the Snapdragon 1000 except the fact that it was spotted on benchmarking websites. However, more details have emerged on the Internet about the upcoming SoC. According to the details, Snapdragon 1000 SoC is likely to be more powerful than previously expected with a TDP of up to 12W instead of the speculated 6.5W. For the uninitiated, TDP means Thermal Design Power and it refers to how powerful a device is. If the report is to be believed then it will be a significant move on Qualcomm s part. This could mean that the company is taking on Intel with its 12W TDP rating. For comparison, Intel s 8250U and 8550U processors are rated at 15W TDP putting Snapdragon 1000 in a striking distance. It is possible that Qualcomm is using the newly announced Cortex A76-cores for the Snapdragon 1000 SoC to achieve that 35 percent performance boost that ARM touted during the announcement of the cores. Considering that Snapdragon 1000 SoC will be used in Laptops, this will give manufacturers more space to work on a better cooling solution and larger battery life when compared to smartphones.

The report by WinFuture.de pointed out that Qualcomm may be looking at TSMC s 7-nm fabrication process to build the SoC. It is likely that the device makers may already have their hands as reports pointed that Asus seems to be working on a prototype with the codename Primus with FHD screen and WiGig wireless connectivity protocol.
