Late last year, Microsoft announced its partnership with Qualcomm for developing Windows 10 for ARM. While the first Windows 10 on ARM laptops are powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC, Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 850 mobile compute platform specially intended for Windows 10 base laptops. At the same time, Qualcomm is also reportedly working on Snapdragon 1000, and details about the chipset have surfaced. According to ArsTechnica, Snapdragon 1000 is expected to be a powerful laptop chipset that will directly compete with Intel s Y-series and U-series Core processors. Both processors are widely used in tablets and ultrabooks, with 4.5W and 15W power envelope. Also Read - Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets will get new naming system: What to expect

The Snapdragon 1000 chip, on the other hand, is likely to come with 6.5W power draw for the CPU, along with a total power draw of 12W. The current test platform has 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and two 128GB UFS flash drives, the report said. It also comes with gigabit LTE and Wi-Fi 802.11ad, along with a new power management controller.

The chip size is also large 20 15mm, compared to 12 12mm for Snapdragon 850. Oddly, the test systems come with a socketed processor rather than a soldered one. Qualcomm Snapdragon 1000 is also expected to be built on TSMC s 7nm process, and use ARM s Cortex-A76 architecture. ARM is expected the A76 to deliver a performance similar to U-series Intel Skylake processors.
