After Qualcomm launched Snapdragon 835 chipset for the top-end smartphones, the chipset maker is now working on a new range of processors in a bid to maintain its stronghold in the mid-range and low-end smartphone market. Now, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 635 chips are somewhat similar with slight variance. Both the chips are expected to be an improved version of the Snapdragon 625, which is known to have more efficient power management and heat reduction capabilities. Further, the leaks suggest that both Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 635 would use eight Cortex-A53 cores in an octa-core arrangement. Now that s almost about all that s been leaked yet, but since they are upgrades of the Snapdragon 625, they can be expected to come with features similar to or developed on such as support for LPDDR3 memory, LTE Cat. 7 baseband and a clock frequency of 2.0 2.2GHz as well as the Adreno 506 GPU or higher. Talking about the third chip, the Snapdragon 660 chipset is said to be manufactured using Samsung s 14nm process and have an octa-core arrangement which may be a combination of the Cortex-A73 and A53 cores. The Snapdragon 660 is said to come with the Adreno 512 GPU and support dual-channel LPDDR4X-1866 memory, UFS 2.1 storage, up to 24-megapixel camera, LTE Cat. 10 and three carrier aggregation.
Details about new Qualcomm chipsets have surfaced shortly after rumors about Xiaomi prepping a smartphone powered by a Snapdragon 660 chipset. Though there aren t a lot of information about this upcoming Xiaomi smartphone, but speculations are it will be the Redmi Pro 2. The smartphone was recently spotted online with the said chipset. According to previous reports, the mass production of the Snapdragon 660 will begin by the second quarter of this year. The chipset is also likely to power smartphones by OPPO and Vivo.
Speaking about processors, Xiaomi had recently made its extensively long rumored in-house processor Pinecone official with its own Weibo page. Xiaomi is reported to launch two models of the Pinecone processor named Pinecone 1 and Pinecone 2. The first smartphone to feature Xiaomi s Pinecone processor is said to be the Mi 5c.
Rival MediaTek recently launched Helio P25 processor with a special focus on dual-camera centric phones. The Helio P25 is based on the 16nm process and has an octa-core arrangement. Successor to Helio P10 and P20 processors, Helio P25 focuses on dual-camera support with support for up to 24-megapixel single camera or dual 13-megapixel cameras. The chipset is also said to improve bandwidth by up to 70 percent while reducing the memory s power needs for energy-efficient multitasking.
