Qualcomm s Snapdragon 600-series chipsets have been very popular with mid-range smartphones, especially the Snapdragon 625, Snapdragon 636 and Snapdragon 660. These chipsets offer the best performance and efficiency in the price segment, and today, Qualcomm is introducing the new Snapdragon 670 mobile platform that comes with a number of improvements over the Snapdragon 660 SoC. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 aims at delivering some of the high-end feature experiences on mid-range smartphones. Built on second-gen 10nm LPP fabrication process, the Snapdragon 670 SoC comes with a Kryo 360 octa-core CPU, which Qualcomm claims to offer 15 percent performance improvement over Snapdragon 660. Of the eight cores, two are performance cores with clock speed of up to 2GHz, and the remaining six are efficiency cores clocked up to 1.7GHz. One of the highlights of the chipset is the focus on camera performance. The Snapdragon 670 SoC comes with Spectra 250 ISP, which supports resolution of 25-megapixels on single camera, and two 16-megapixel sensors for the dual camera setup. Qualcomm says that the new ISP reduces power consumption by up to 30 percent when recording videos. Smartphones powered by Snapdragon 670 will support camera features such as slow-motion video, and 4K Ultra HD video recording.
The chipset supports display resolution up to Full HD+ for 18:9 aspect ratio, and above. Other features include an API for Unity and Vulkan support, Aqstic audio for Hi-Fi audio experience, and support for Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology.
Qualcomm has also made some on-device AI improvements that are said to have 1.8 times faster processing capabilities compared to Snapdragon 660. These improvements come in the form of reliability, privacy and responsiveness. And as it takes advantage of on-device machine learning, the AI can perform tasks even if there is no internet connection.
Lastly, the SD 670 mobile platform also comes with X12 LTE modem which enables download speeds of up to 600Mbps, and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps. Smartphones running on Snapdragon 670 SoC will make its way to the markets later this year.
