Qualcomm is set to launch its next flagship mobile chipset next month. The rumored Snapdragon 8150 will replace the Snapdragon 845 found on most Android flagships including the Google Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6. The smartphone chipset will come months after competitive flagship processor from brands like Apple, Huawei and Samsung. Apple was the first introduce its flagship processor when it launched the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR with A12 Bionic in September. It was followed by Huawei, which launched the Mate 20 Pro powered by Kirin 980 last month. Apple A12 Bionic as well as Huawei Kirin 980 are fabricated using TSMC’s 7nm process and come with 6.9 billion transistors. While the A12 Bionic is miles ahead of competition, the Kirin 980 has beaten all other chipsets in benchmark of Android smartphones. Now, a tweet by prominent leakster Ice Universe claims that Qualcomm will announce the Snapdragon 8150 at its Snapdragon Technology Summit on December 4. The Snapdragon Summit last year was also held in December but Qualcomm has not shared any details just yet. The reports so far suggest that the chip will be called Snapdragon 8150, which could be based on MSM 8XXX model number, and means that the company is dropping Snapdragon 8XX series that it has followed on the past.
The information regarding the launch is based on number of Chinese tech media professionals receiving invites for the Qualcomm Technology Summit on December 4. The event is said to be held in Hawaii like last year. The invites seem to be going out to Chinese tech media first but it could have been extended to media from other countries as well.
The leaked benchmark for Snapdragon 8150 suggests that it will be the most powerful SoC from the mobile chipmaker yet. It achieved a single-core score of 3,505, and multi-core score of 10,608 on Geekbench. The developer prototype board has achieved the highest score in AI benchmark as well.
