It s day three of the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 that is taking place in Maui, Hawaii, and Qualcomm kept the best announcement for last. After announcing the Snapdragon 855 SoC for smartphones yesterday, the chipmaker has today announced Snapdragon 8cx compute platform. Successor to the Snapdragon 850 that was announced at Computex 2018 earlier this year, the new Snapdragon 8cx SoC is built on 7nm process, and focuses on extreme performance, battery life and connectivity. Qualcomm mentioned that the PC market is just under 200 million, whereas the mobile devices market is close to 2 billion. Users are looking for mobile solutions where they get powerful processing, great battery life and super-fast connectivity. These used cases will be the focus of Snapdragon 8cx compute platform, and it will be powering the Windows 10 Always Connected PCs. Performance and battery life
Snapdragon 8cx brings more power and improved efficiency to the table. Qualcomm says, the new chipset is 2X faster than the Snapdragon 850 SoC, and up to 3.5X faster than the Snapdragon 835 compute platform. It features Kryo 495 octa-core CPU with bigLITTLE architecture whereas four are performance cores, and four are efficiency cores. The CPU comes with a larger system cache, and L3 cache, a total of 10MB.
The chipset is paired with Adreno 680 GPU, featuring 2X more transistors, 2X more bandwidth, and high-efficiency video encoder. It also supports the latest DirectX 12 API for better graphics performance. The GPU also supports dual 4K HDR external monitors, and 2nd gen HDR playback. Qualcomm says that despite all the more power that Snapdragon 8cx has got, it is 60 percent more efficient than the Snapdragon 850 SoC.
Always connected PCs is not just about battery life and performance, but also about seamless connectivity. The Snapdragon 8cx comes with the new X24 LTE modem with speeds up to 2Gbps. It also supports 4X4 MIMO, 7x Carrier Aggregation, and also supports 20 data streams.
The Snapdragon 8cx also supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+, Aqstic audio tech, and aptX HD codec for immersive audio experience. The chipset also supports two virtual assistants, where you can have both Amazon Alexa and Cortana, dual 4K HDR and USB 3.1 2nd gen with speeds up to 10Gbps.
In terms of app ecosystem, the Snapdragon 8cx supports apps like Netflix, VLC, Hulu, Spotify, Firefox, Chromium, games support from Gameloft, and many more, all that can be downloaded from the Microsoft s Windows Store.
