Qualcomm s Snapdragon chipsets go by the designation MSM, but it is now reported that the chipmaker will change it to SDM. The last chipset released by Qualcomm so far is the Snapdragon 835 which is the MSM8998 currently running on flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Xiaomi Mi 6, Sony Xperia XZ Premium. With the shift to SDM, the Snapdragon 835 will be the last chipset with the MSM nomenclature. This information doesn t come from Qualcomm, but has been leaked on Weibo (spotted by PhonesDaily). The leak further reveals that the next chipset from Qualcomm will be the Snapdragon 845 and would possibly be codenamed SDM845. Following this, future chipsets would also carry the SDMxxx iteration. Speaking about the Snapdragon 845, the chipset with an X20 modem is said to offer download speeds up to 1.2Gbps and upload speeds going up to 150Mbps.
Details on the CPU and GPU for the Snapdragon 845 chipset were leaked previously. The Snapdragon 845 SoC was reported to come with a Cortex A75 and Cortex A55 cores and will rely on BIG.little architecture. Overall, the CPU performance is said to increase by 20-30 percent on the Snapdragon 845 SoC. For graphics, the Snapdragon 845 SoC is said to come with Adreno 630 GPU improving performance by 30 percent as compared to the existing Adreno 530 GPU. While Samsung could be the front-runner again for the Snapdragon 845 SoC, it may not be manufacturing the chipset. A new report, however, suggested that Qualcomm s Snapdragon 845 SoC would be manufactured by TSMC instead. TSMC which is currently building the Apple A10 chips, and will build the Apple A11 SoC on 10nm process, will have its hands full with the Snapdragon 845 SoC.
