Back in September, Qualcomm surprised everyone by unveiling a smartwatch called Toq on the same day as Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The chipset maker today announced that the smartwatch will start selling on its website from December 2 onwards with prices starting at $349.99 (Rs 28,000 approximately). Qualcomm has yet to reveal detailed specifications for the Toq (pronounced as Talk), but it did reveal some of the technologies being used on the smartwatch. Toq features Qualcomm s Mirasol display technology, which uses low energy and ambient lighting to give a clear view of the text, WiPower LE technology, which is its version of wireless charging and comes with its own Bluetooth-enabled stereo headphones.
Toq will pair with smartphones running on Android 4.0.3 and above using Bluetooth. One will be able to accept/reject calls, view SMS, alerts and app notifications. The smartwatch will also come preloaded with applets from AccuWeather and E*Trade.
The Toq smartwatch showcases key Qualcomm innovations, such as Mirasol always on low power display, AllJoyn interactions and WiPower LE wireless charging, that will define the emerging wearable category, Qualcomm s chief executive Paul Jacobs said. Like a traditional watch, Toq also displays information at a glance with no on/off switch. And paired with a smartphone to receive notifications and content, it allows the watch to seamlessly merge our physical and digital lives.
